Decoding HTML Colour Codes

by Javascript Specialist August 12, 2014 21:39

Understanding HTML Colour codes is actually very easy. Computer colour is represented using a combination of red, green and blue, abbreviated RGB. Each of these colours is measured with a shade from 0 to 255.

Thus, Red can be expressed as RGB(255,0,0).
Green can be expressed as  RGB(0,255,0)
And Blue can be expressed as RBC(0,0,255)

In HTML colour code, the colour is represent in hexadecimal format. The colour is coded using 6 characters with each character represent as a digit from 0 to 15 where A=10, B=11, C=12, D=13, E=14, F=15, Hexadecimal base. Two characters can represent a colour from 0-255 where 00 represents 0 and FF represents 255.
So Red, express in Hex format is #FF00000.
Green expressed in Hex format is #00FF00.
And Blue expressed in Hex format is  #0000FF.

If you mix Blue and Green together, you get CYAN #00FFFF.
If you mix Red and Blue together, you get Magenta, #FF00FF
And if you mix Red and Green together, you get Yellow, #FFFF00.

If you mix all three colours together, you get white #FFFFFF. If you remove all three colours, you get black #000000. Knowing which HTML colour code is balck and white comes in handy when you want to determine shades of color.

Shades:

The closer, the HTML colour code is to white, the lighter the colour is. The closer the HTML colour is to black, the darker, the colour is.

So to get a darker shade of red such as maroon, you can reduce the HTML colour code of the first two characters to #800000.
Similarly, navy blue  is HTML coded as #000080
and dark green is HTML coded as #006400.

Shades of grey can be represented by mixing the same amount of each of the colours such as silver is HTML coded as #C0C0C0.

How about shades of other colours like Yellow?
Since Yellow is represented by #FFFF00. Moving the last two characters of this HTML colour code closer to white will make the yellow lighter such as light yellow #FFFFE0.
Similarly, to display a darker yellow, you can move the first four characters closer to black and making sure you set an equal number of Red and Blue such as for olive would be #808000.

This same concept of different shades can be applied to the Cyan and Magenta.

So what about other colours such as orange, or brown? Well, these are just a combination of RGB colours. One may then wonder how you get different shades of orangewhere it has a mix degree of RGB colours, #FFA500. Well, all you have to do is shift the colour mixture with the same proportions. For an example, click below:
